just a nice toned muscular body like
you.
3. Is it ok if you send me all the
basic exercises I can do at my age 11?
4. Do you have to go swimming often to
have a muscular toned body?
These are the list of
questions that I hope you can answer for me. I would
love to know more about you. And I also wish to have
to the same kind of body as you when I grow up..
Thanks again Singapore's friend, Sean Toh. I'm also

Are The Answers Specially For Your Questions, Sean! Sincerely From
Sean Toh.
Dear
Sean,
Nice
to hear from you again. I'm glad you are interested in bodybuilding.
Let me tell you how I started bodybuilding?
I
must said that I love the look of muscles on the body when I was
young. Just like you now, Sean. When I saw bodybuilders on the TV
programmes, magazines or books, I'm naturally drawn to them. I love
reading those 'Muscles & Fitness' & Flex magazines from Joe
Weider that I would save every single penny to buy secondhand
magazines from secondhand bookstores. I will do chin-ups, push-ups,
sit-ups and lift books or pails of water just to work those muscles. I
will head for the gym after school to workout and I could workout
everyday. I started bodybuilding at maybe the age of 10 and serious
bodybuilding when I was 16 years old. From 16-23 years old, I tried to
build mass on my body structure and I took part in the Inter-varsity
Bodybuilding competition representing Singapore Polytechnic and came
in Third for the show. Below is a picture of the competition that I
competed in 1992 and I in the middle wearing a blue trunk. We were
asked to execute the 'Front Double Biceps Pose'.
I
got into serious training when I fractured my knee-cap when I was in
Secondary One in Westlake Secondary School doing my Physical Education
lesson executing Long-Jump. I had two operations to have metals
inserted in my knee and removed after a year after the first
operation. I could not bend my knee even after the operation as I could
not walk, run and squat properly. I undergone therapy at Toa Payoh
hospital doing stationary cycling and simple leg-extension exercise
with light weight wrapped around my feet. When I could bend my knee
properly after the therapy, I trained serious to fully regained
control of the functions of my knee and legs. I chose to persevere to
achieve what I really want - to able to walk, run and jump fully. You can
learn a lot from me and yourself. Do not under estimate your full
potential!

Steps To Financial Freedom
Let
me tell you that it is not easy to get ripped
muscles unless you go into serious dieting eating very clean food and
do your cardiovascular exercise for 25 minutes and above ,3-4 times a
week. With the food that Singaporean are eating like Roti Prata,
Carrot Cakes, Chicken Rice, Satay, Nasi Goreng, Nasi Padang, etc. I
can assure you that you would not get ripped muscles if you are not doing
cardiovascular exercises like jogging, cycling, swimming, etc. If you

Basic Exercises For
11 Years Old
What are some of the exercises for you,
Sean? Don't get caught up in the training routine's that the pros put
out in the magazines, those will only lead to over-training. They have
all day just to lift, eat and rest, they don't have to go through 7
plus hours of school and all that other junk you have to do.
The routines they do are good for them,
but may not be good for you. Like you have heard many times before, no
two people are created equal, and this applies to bodybuilding also.
So when it comes to training go back to the basic compound exercises
and keep it simple.
It is very important to not neglect any
muscle, especially your larger muscles, like legs and back. Those are
two commonly neglected muscles, and the two muscles that if you get
them big everything else will follow. You should base your routine
around the compound exercises, these are exercises that involve
multiple muscles to help move the weights.
For example in bench press, you are primarily
working out your chest, but you are also getting help from your front
delts and your triceps. I will list the main compound exercises for
each primary muscle.
BACK
Deadlifts
Barbell Rows
T-Bar Rows
Pull-Ups
LEGS
Squats-(king of all exercises)
Straight Leg Deadlifts-(can be done
with a slight bend)
Leg Press
CHEST
Incline Bench Press- Barbell or
Dumbbell
Flat Bench Press- Barbell or
Dumbbell
Dips- lean more forward, to hit your
chest more - I don't think declines are necessary, because flat
bench and dips will hit your lower chest enough
DELTS
Military Press- Barbell or Dumbbell
Push Press
TRICEPS
Close Grip Bench- hands should be
spaced about 8-12 inches apart
Skull Crushers/Lying Tricep
Extensions
Dips- with your body more upright
BICEPS
Barbell or Dumbbell Curls
Incline Curls
Preacher Curls
Those are the more basic exercises for
each muscle which you should be able to do the most weight for also. I
would recommend sticking to these exercises listed above or a
variation of them. Don't get to caught up in many cable and machine
exercises.
Free weights are more superior in terms
of gaining mass. Machines are more for isolation and you really don't
need those unless you are training to enter a contest or your physique
is at the point to where you are satisfied or you are big enough to
start worrying about "detailing" your physique. I doubt many
teens are at the point to where they need that. I know I am not even
near that point.
You should also be keeping your sets
and reps relatively low. If you don't have the proper nutrition to
feed your depleted muscles after being torn down by lifting, then
doing many sets will just tear them down more and more and if you
don't have the proper nutrition they won't repair properly and you
will only be tearing them down worse, and you won't be gaining, you
might be losing.
For your smaller body parts do about
6-8 sets, and for bigger body parts do about 9-12 sets. Keep your reps
relatively low to gain some good size and strength, we are all looking
to get bigger and stronger muscles. The so called "best" rep
range is from about the 6-10 rep range, I think it is pretty true.
Sometimes I will go for a heavy workout and train in the 4-6 rep
range, but that is for variation. As for you,
Sean. I would suggest you stick within the range of 6-10 rep as
your body structure is still developing and might not be able to take
so much weight to just achieve 4-6 rep range till failure.
I hope you get a better understanding
on what to do in the gym, to continue growing. Keep it simple and keep
it moderately heavy, train within your limits. And have some patience.
As for illustration of all the exercises, please
Tanning
your body helps you burn off those calories when you are sun-bathing
or sun-tanning and a tanned body give an illusion of a muscular
body when your skin is brown in coluor. You don't have to go swimming
in order to keep your body lean and muscular. In fact, too much sun
exposure is harmful to your skin as you likely to develop skin cancer
later on in your life. However, swimming is a good cardiovascular
exercise if you swim at a faster pace with many laps in order to
achieve a cardiovascular benefits. Bodybuilders like to use artificial tanning
products for competition by applying bronzing gels on the skin surface
and spreading evenly to achieve an even tan just before they go on stage.
As too much sun exposure is harmful to the skin and it is not easy to
achieve an even tan in areas like armpit areas. Hence, if you are
interested to know more about tanning products for use during
competition, please
